Chapter 37
EVE ANSWERED HER RINGING mobile as Cooper drove them back to the station.
âCan you speak?â Mearns spoke fast, as if she had news. Unexpected, even when theyâd all come in, more than willing to work overtime at the thought of moving the case forward.
âYeah, about ten minutes away and my knuckles are still twitching to punch Miller.â
âNot a productive meeting?â
âThe guy knows how to avoid a question. Heâd make a good politician. Whatâs up?â
âForensics came back on those prints.â
Eve held her breath.
âYou were right. Our Jane Doe was at Deanâs murder. On top of that, as far as Deanâs mate Andrewâs death goes, we may have a way of finding out more about those missing files. Marcie Wade from the Aberdeen Enquirer called.â
âHow can she help?â
âIâm not sure, but youâll want to see her. She says she has information about Andrew Shirriffs.â
Eve wasnât expecting that titbit. âWhenâs she free?â
Marcie Wade possessed none of the brashness that her predecessor, Claire Jenkins, had.
Eve and Mearns sat at the four-seater Costa table watching her at the counter exchanging chit-chat and laughter with the barista who was serving her. The coffee house had been the perfect place to meet. Tucked at the bottom of the Marischal College retail and office development where the Aberdeen Enquirer offices were housed, it was also a two-minute walk from the station.
Marcie made her way back to the table clutching a tray with three large lattes on it and three chocolate muffins that hadnât been mentioned. Eve found herself comparing Marcieâs mousey-brown hair, loosely fastened in a bun, to Jenkinsâ severe bright red hair. Even Marcieâs floral shift dress was in stark contrast to Jenkinsâ once signature sharp, black suit, worn with matching glasses frames. Cut-throat and meaning business. Eve missed Jenkins in her own way. Theyâd never been friends but at least sheâd known what she was getting with her.
Marcie put down the tray, shared out the cups and plates and sat. âThanks for agreeing to see me.â
Eve sipped at her drink, placed the cup back down. âItâs fair to say you left us no choice after what you said on the phone.â
Marcie smiled as she opened the plastic wrapper of her muffin. Eve was still wary of that smile, questioning whether it was genuine any time theyâd met but aware her opinion of the press was shaped by the woman Jenkins had been. A woman who had possessed two smiles â sneaky or smug. Marcie had shown neither and Eve was trying not to judge her by her predecessor. Maybe she genuinely was a nicer, more helpful woman. More interested in reporting the news with facts instead of sensationalism. Maybe.
Marcie took a large bite from the muffin, not waiting to clear her mouth before she spoke, her words mumbled. âI know you guys are busy so Iâll get straight to it.â
She bent beneath the table, rummaging in an oversized bag that lay at her feet, before reappearing with a thick file, paper overspilling its edges. She
